Abstract

Financial sustainability and operational efficiency are vital elements of every business organisation, vis-à-vis laboratory businesses. Thus, they have become pressing concerns especially for laboratory managers across the globe. It is based on this backdrop that this thematic study reviewed budgeting for financial sustainability and operational efficiency of laboratory businesses in Nigeria, with the aim of analysing budget as a tool for financial sustainability and operational efficiency of laboratory businesses in Nigeria. Methodologically, it reviewed the types of budgets used in laboratories, budgeting cycle in laboratories, key laboratory stakeholders in budget development, costs associated with laboratory budget, the rationale for budgeting in laboratory businesses, and challenges of budgeting in laboratory businesses in Nigeria. The study concluded that effective budgeting is crucial for the sustainable and efficient operation of laboratories, and that by implementing structured budgeting practices, laboratories can plan, allocate, and monitor financial resources with greater precision. However, there are challenges facing the implementation of budgets in laboratories in Nigeria. Thus, the study suggested amongst others that strong financial acumen should be developed, adaptive leadership should be provided, and budget allocations to high-impact areas should be prioritised.
